Ethiopia Urban Expansion Initiative (UEI) Evaluation Final Report

Description

This report evaluates the long-term impact of the Ethiopia Urban Expansion Initiative (UEI), a collaborative effort between the Ethiopian Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure and the Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University. Conducted between 2023-2024 with funding from the Open Philanthropy Foundation, the evaluation assesses the socio-economic and infrastructural outcomes of technical assistance provided to 18 secondary cities in Ethiopia from 2013-2015. The UEI focused on training municipal officials to plan for urban growth by projecting 30-year population increases, securing arterial road grids, and protecting environmentally sensitive areas. The evaluation employed geospatial analysis, qualitative assessments, and household surveys across eight cities to measure the initiative's impact.
