Ukraine in Russian publishing, 2000-2021: Bibliography

The dataset represents a structured bibliography of 3,500+ titles published in the Russian Federation between the year 2000 and the end of 2021. The goal of the dataset is to document how Ukraine, Ukrainians, Ukrainian culture and current events were presented to the Russian reading public, changes in the rhetoric following the Orange Revolution, Euromaidan, the annexation of Crimea and the start of hostilities in Donbass in 2014. Analysis of the dataset may contribute to understanding if, and how, the printed word influenced the perception of Ukraine and Ukrainians among the Russian reading public during this period.

The bibliography was compiled by collecting data from the commercially-available Russian National Bibliography (EastView), catalogs of the Russian National Library and the Russian State Library, the catalog of the Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), the catalog of the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) as well as OCLC WorldCat. Almost all of the titles were inspected manually for the content analysis and subject designation.

To be included in this dataset, a title had to meet several requirements:

1. It is written by a Ukrainian author, OR, Ukraine (within internationally recognized borders, including Crimea and Donbass) is prominently featured in the content of the book, or in a significant part of the text (e.g. a designated chapter that specifically addresses history, politics, or culture of Ukraine);

2. The content is described in a blurb as being of interest to the general public.

3. If a book was re-published with a different ISBN, it is included in the dataset (a newly published title may include a new introduction, description or cover art).
