ceedingly; sar, very, aspirate the
adjectives to which they are prefixed,
as; sar-ṁaiṫ, exceedingly good.
The prepositions air, on; de, of or
off ; do, to; faoi or fa, under; eidir
or idir, between; mar, like to, because,
as; ó, from; tar, over; tre, through;
um, about, cause aspiration, as; air
ḃárr an tiġ (tiġ, gen. of teaċ, a house),
on the top of the house.
These are the leading rules for aspi¬
ration; we shall note the others and
also the exceptions in a future lesson.
Students will remember that we no¬
ted in a former lesson the nine conso¬
nants which are subject to aspiration.
Eclipsing consonants and those that
are eclipsed —
m eclipise b, as;
ar mbád, our boat.
g " c, "
ar g-ceart, " right.
n " d "
ḃur n-dorus, your door
d " t "
a d-tír, their country.
b " p "
ar b-páisde, our child.
ḃ " f "
a ḃ-fuil, their blood.
n " g "
ar ngaḃar, our goat.
t " s "
an t-slat, the rod.
Eclipsis takes place after the poss¬
essive pronouns ar, our; ḃur, your ; a,
their, as; ar d-talaṁ, our land. In
the gen. plural of nouns when the ar¬
ticle is expressed, as; na m-bó, of the
cows.
The prepositions ag, at; air, on; is,
inns, or ins, in; as, out of ; faoi or fa,
under; gus, towards; leis, with; mar,
like, as; ó, from; ṫar, over; treas,
tre, through; um, about, when follow¬
ed by the article, cause eclipsis of
the noun in the singular number only,
as; air an d-talaṁ, on the land. The
prepositions a or i, in ; iar, after, asp¬
irate with or without the article.
We shall treat of this more fully as
we go along.
