Because of the reduced size of
the two last issues of the Gael, our
old neglectful subscribers got scar¬
ed and thought that something
was wrong; so, many have appear¬
ed in this issue. The fact is a re¬
newed proof of the tenacious ad¬
herence to principle of the genuin¬
ely patriotic Irishman. Friends,
the surest and far better way for
keeping your Gael in a healthy so-
lid condition is, to send your sub¬
scription regularly every year; it
will be lighter on you, and more
beneficial to the Gael.
The English press is never tired
hinting what we should do with
the Philipine Islands after our war
with Spain. What we shall do in
the premises is, when Spain makes
us proper amends, and them back
to her. Our actions in relation to
Cuba are dictated by the noblest
moral principles, and it would ill
become us to place any human be¬
ing under the way of the people
who consigned our patriots of '76
to the hulks of the Prison Ship;
who shot the Sepoys from the can¬
non's mouth; who murdered 300
Soudanese a few weeks ago; who
pitched the infants from bayonet
to bayonet in the town of Droghe¬
da, and who strangled a blood rela¬
tion of our worthy President, tied
to the tail of a cart; and all these
fighting to free their native land.
If these barbarous actions be ex¬
celled by Spain's tyranny in Cuba,
we cannot conjecture in what res¬
pect. Were America base enough
to hand the Philippine over to her¬
she herself would deserve to be di¬
vided as are Africa and Asia.
