sgríoḃ mé ḃ-faid ó d'ḟág mé 'n scoil
Tá súil agam go ḃ-fuil siḃ dul ċum
ċinn go maiṫ.
Cuirim críoċ air mo leitir, le meas
mór na Gaoḋailge, go ḃ-fuil tú féin
go maiṫ.
Do ċara ḋílis,
Miċeál J. O'Suilleaḃáin
Fall River, Mass.
Philo-Celts,
(Continued from page 18.)
branches are formed in Cork, Belfast, London,
Glasgow, Liverpool, Birkenhead, Donegal. Gal¬
way, Tralee, Dunmanway, Waterford, Kealkill,
Macroom, Derry, Farney, Castlelyons, Mount
Mellerary etc. The Irish language was taught
last year in 70 of the public schools compared
with 59 in '95, and 1217 pupils presented for ex¬
amination compared with 1,131 in '95; and the
Christian Brothers passed 544 of their pupils com¬
pared with 523 in '95; 29 Teachers received cer¬
tificates to teach Irish compared with 17 in '95.
Between the Public and Christian Brothers'
Schools the Irish language was taught in 120.
Your little journal, THE GAEL, which has been
the very life of the Gaelic Movement in America
and its readers a strong prop to the movement in
Ireland, as present and recent events demonstrate,
is in a prosperous condition and has distributed
not less than 1,440 copies, of each issue, among
Irishmen for the last ten years, a large number
of whom are to-day excellent Gaelic scholars.
When this Society was organized it had seem¬
ingly insurmountable difficulties to contend with
— the prejudices arising from the wily represent¬
ations of the enemies of Irish autonomy that the
Irish Language was a mere "gibberish”, spoken
only by the lowly and the mean — but now, that it
has brought it to the notice of the learned world
and that the learned world has embarked in the
study of obtaining a knowledge of it — the greatest
compliment which can be paid to any man or na¬
tion being to copy him or it — Ireland and the na¬
tional language are safe.
Respectfully submitted, —
M. J. Logan
