QUESTION — Suppose Ireland gets Home Rule
and that the Irish language is taught in the
schools, what will they do for teachers when there
is only one man in the world competent to teach it!
Le Caron has done an immense service to the
Irish element in America by exposing the length
to which the English agents go to bring discredit
on them. Had he succeeded in his nefarious
schemes of destroying the lives and property of
American citizens, the pro-British mugwump press
would bristle with indignation at the "lawless
Irish element."
The same Le Caron developments make it plain
to Americans that the English element in the
country are not desirable citizens. One thing is
certain — that no Englishman should hold office
under the government.
Pigott has done a lasting service to Ireland by
showing the civilized world that what is called
"the British aristocracy.” can descend to the low¬
est depths of depravity to take the lives of inno¬
cent men. The Invincibles who slayed Cavendish
and Burke are saints beside Salisbury and his co¬
adjutors. The Invincibles slayed the agents of
tyranny, who voluntarly ran the risk, while Salis-
bury and his gang concocted a nefarious conspir¬
acy to murder innocent men battling for their
hearths and homes.
Poor John Boyle O'Reilly is eating the leek!
During the Christmas holidays we sent about
three hundred postal cards to the readers of the
GAEL wishing them the compliments of the sea¬
son in the old Language. Up to date we have re¬
ceived 147 postals and 39 letters, in the same lan¬
guage, returning the compliments. We thought
there were not so many competent to write Irish:
and it is those whom we know to be well able to
write Gaelic that did not make a return. We pre¬
sume that those who did write wanted to let us
know that they knew how. This state of things
is encouraging. We appreciate it.
