The Irish Echo has ceased to exist, and the more
shame for you, Irish-Americans. Because some of
the matter which appeared in the Echo did not suit
you, you let it die. It published Gaelic, at all events,
and when it did it should have been supported by
Irishmen, whether its management had been plea¬
sing to them or not. It is not the management of
any publication that men support and when they
withdraw that support because of personal differen¬
ces, they show the world that their pretended activi¬
ty in prompting the interests of the underlying prin¬
ciples was a myth — it is the disfigurement of the
nose to spite the face. For the small cost to the in¬
dividual, Irishmen should support all Gaelic publica¬
tions, for they must know that no movement can go
forward unless it be kept before the public — and the
Irishman who is not able to speak or read the lang¬
uage is as much bound to preserve it as he who does
unless he be willing that he and his posterity should
become Ismaels among the nations.
Ireland has two inveterate foes within her bosom
the Orangeman and the West Briton Catholic, and
of the two, the latter is the greater enemy to Irish
National autonomy, and this is the man who says,
"What good is the language," and does nothing to
preserve it. He sends the poor-box to his country¬
men in America to help him get free land, but he
leaves them and their children to do battle against
the charge of "Ignorance," which his neglect to cul¬
tivate the language and literature of his and their
country has given color. He should not get a penny
in America until he exhibits proof that he is doing
something to remove the grounds for that charge,
and that is, to have the language taught in all the
schools where it is spoken. That would not cost him
one cent. We shall recur to this again.
Councillor J E O'Malley reports that they expect
to have a large Gaelic class in Scranton, Pa., under
the tuition of Professor Lovern — Good speed to it.
