AN GAODHAL.
BIGOTRY FRUSTRATED.
The Irish-American element in
Greater New York should never
forget the American manliness of
the leaders of the Republican par¬
ty of the State in frustrating the
ably laid plans of the knownothing
Mugwumps for capturing the con¬
trol of the enlarged city, under the
leadership of Seth Low. We don't
know whether Seth Low is or is
not a knownothing. But this we
do know, that there is not a man
in Brooklyn tinged with that lep¬
rously noxious malady that was
not a rabid supporter of Mr. Low,
and if we judge him by his compa¬
ny, which is a reasonable and, pro¬
bably safe, rule, then, he is one. A¬
nother assertion to the truth of
which we challenge contradiction,
that there is not an Englishman or
a "Scotch Irishman" who was not
a supporter of Seth Low's rump
candidacy for the mayoralty of
Greater New York. And this be¬
ing patent to all intelligent observ¬
ers, it is beyond our comprehension
how any Irish American citizen
could cast a ballot for him. Yet
very many have done so, for we
see by the election returns that in
almost exclusively Irish wards his
vote is abnormal. And it is with
a tinge of shame and sorrow that
we are forced by the circumstance
to fear that the lavish use of mon¬
ey ($5,000,000,00 it is said) by the
Low emissaries must have its eff¬
ect in those places.
The superhuman efforts made by
the Mugwumps to capture the city
were merely the initial move in
their scheme to capture the State,
send the knownothing Choate to
the United States Senate, and sec¬
ure Low delegates to the presiden¬
tial convention in 1900. The Mug¬
wumps hate President McKinley,
they are all Free-traders, and
would burn him in effigy, as their
confreres in England did after the
passage of his protective bill, if
they dared.
But, thanks to Messrs. Platt, Tra¬
cy, and the other leading Republi¬
cans, Lowism is laid low to-day,
and the two old-time organizations
of Republicanism and Democracy
will fight their battles, divested of
cant and hypocrisy, with the "fear
of God" in their hearts, without
profaning the Sacred Name after
the manner of crooks when laying
their plans to prey on the public
There is no doubt the Raines li¬
quor law has materially helped to
beat the Republicans in the last
campaign. The high license has
left many stores vacant There is
no denying of this, and as soon as
the legislature meets it would be
to the interest of the party to am¬
end the law by reducing the license
tax. Our German friends are a so¬
ciable, quiet people; they are as at¬
tached to their national beverage,
lager, as the Italians and French
are to their wine. Saloon-keepers
selling lager only should not be
taxed higher than $30 a year, and
those selling ale and lager, $100. If
our country friends cannot read
the signs of the times they ought
to study them closer.
The use of the pronoun "I" was
in great quest during the late cam¬
paign. So as to "rub sleeves" with
their great idol some of the better
element of his following outraged
grammar rules to stick in the "I".
Instance the great Leonard Moody
in the Citizen writing to Lieut G.
Woodruff, "Between you and I."
